L’Oreal Skincare and Hair Collection Review
By the Editor | November 18, 2010
L’Oreal recently signed on a new celebrity to promote their hair and skincare collection. The celebrity was quoted as saying she was “honored to represent a brand that is rich in history, synonymous with beauty and reflective of the modern woman”.
There is no doubt that the company is rich, with earnings of over 17 billion euro in 2009. The history is relatively long. In 1907, they began providing hair dyes, which were promoted as inoffensive or “safe”.
The safety of the original ingredients is unknown, but the ingredients the company includes in their hair dyes today are far from safe. According to Skin Deep, they are highly hazardous.
Skin Deep is an online database created by the Environmental Working Group. You can visit the site. Type in a product name and if it has been evaluated by the group, you can find out about the safety of the ingredients, as well as the overall safety of the product.
In some cases, the risks are due to the inclusion of numerous chemicals. The chemicals interact to form byproducts, many of which are known to cause cancer.
Skin Deep ranks products from 0-10. Scoring a 10 is usually a good thing. In this rating system, a product that scores a 10 is highly hazardous. The L’Oreal hair dyes analyzed by the Environmental Working Group score 8s, 9s and 10s.
One L’Oreal skincare collection includes an anti-aging cream for dry skin called Dermo-Expertise. EWG gives the cream a 10, highly hazardous. EWG notes that 100% of anti-aging creams tested have lower concerns and 100% of moisturizers tested have lower concerns. The highest hazard rating given to any other product in the category is a 9.
If you are like most modern women, you understand that beauty may only be skin deep, but chemicals in cosmetics can penetrate through the skin and enter the bloodstream. You have read about the dangers of phthalates, parabens, dioxins, triethanolamine and other synthetic chemicals.
You want lasting beauty, but you are not willing to risk your health to get it. You want a safe and natural anti-aging skincare collection. There is one, but the manufacturer is not L’Oreal.
