How to Choose Safe & Natural Skin Care Products
By the Editor | July 19, 2010
Choosing safe and natural skin care products can be very hard. It isn’t that manufacturers don’t “claim” to provide them. It’s just that their claims are not always completely honest.
Safety is actually the big issue here. If you are like most people, you would like naturally occurring ingredients, because you think they are safer than artificial ingredients.
In many cases, you are right. But, there are a few exceptions.
Lead, mercury, cadmium and other heavy metals are found in nature. They are probably not on the list of ingredients in your favourite cosmetics, they can be there as contaminants in natural plant extracts.
Numerous contaminants are present in tap water, which is why water must be purified before it is used in skin care products.
Purified water does not occur in nature. You can see the contradictions and the confusion.
We need to be able to believe in the manufacturer’s ability to produce the safest all natural skin care products. How do you know which companies to trust?
Choose a company that is a signer of the “Compact for Safe Cosmetics”. Companies that have signed the compact promise to use the European Union’s stricter standards for skin care ingredients. Big companies were offered the opportunity to sign. Not one has agreed to sign.
The EU has banned or strictly regulated 1000′s of ingredients, because they are known to cause birth defects, cancer or genetic mutations. The United States has restricted only a few compounds.
The latest white paper from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics warned against the use of perfumes & fragrances.
Both chemical or naturally occurring, fragrances can trigger asthma attacks, allergic reactions, headaches and shortness of breath. They are also common allergens.
According to the law, cosmetic manufacturers are not allowed to sell any product that can cause harm to the health of the user. But, there is no requirement to prove their ingredients are safe.
Any company that uses chemical preservatives is actually breaking the law, because they have been proven to cause allergic reactions. That is harmful to the user’s health.
As you continue your search for anti wrinkle creams, be sure to look for manufacturers that have signed the compact. That way, you’ll be safe.

I am using a skin care product that is known in mineral cosmetology and haven’t experienced any bad reactions on my skin. If no allergic reactions have occurred, I guess it is safe to say that the product is safe and effective even if they haven’t signed the compact for safe cosmetics.
