Tips for Choosing a Dermatology Clinic

By the Editor | June 7, 2010

Choosing a dermatology clinic is easy when there is only one in your area.  But in most communities, there are dozens to choose from.  Here’s some advice for making the right choice.

Find Out About Insurance

Depending on the Kind of health insurance you have, you may need a referral from your primary care physician.  If no referral is necessary, you will want to call the office and make sure that they take your insurance before you make an appointment.

Generally speaking, insurance providers will not cover cosmetic procedures.  But, a flexible spending plan can usually be used to cover those procedures.

Ask About Payment Plans

In the event that the procedure you want is not covered by insurance, you will want to get an estimate and find out about payment plans before you make a commitment.  Dermatological procedures can be expensive.  If the dermatologist does not offer a payment plan, there are credit cards available that were designed specifically to use for optional and essential health care procedures.

What’s Your Specialty?

There are many different procedures available today.  There are dozens of different conditions affecting the hair, skin and nails.

A dermatologist might specialize in laser hair removal or hair transplantation.  He or she might specialize in the latest acne or anti-aging treatments.  So, when you call up a dermatology clinic, explain to the receptionist why you are seeking treatment.

Not all dermatologists perform all procedures.  There are just too many of them.  Some, such as laser treatments, require expensive equipment.

You might have to do a little travelling to get exactly what you want, but it’s still a good idea to see a specialist.  A dermatologist might offer all kinds of procedures, but be inexperienced with performing them.

What If There’s an Emergency?

Most dermatological procedures are non-invasive and recovery time is short.  But, no procedure is without risk.  Even Botox injections have been known to cause serious adverse reactions.

Find out how an emergency room can contact the doctor or the dermatology clinic in case you have a bad reaction to a procedure.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.
